Monday 2nd March – Fictionalising the Shoah (Jewish Book Week)

02/03/2020 Leave a Comment

The Second Generation Network is sponsoring this evening event. ‘To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric.’ But despite Theodor Adorno’s dictum dramatising the Holocaust has become a trend, in both books and film. Should the Holocaust, the nadir of humanity, be fictionalised? When we do dramatise the suffering, how should we approach it, and should any topics be off limits? Toby Haggith, author of The Holocaust and the Moving Image, and Peter Filkins, the translator of H.G. Adler’s trio of Holocaust novels as well as his biographer, will be in discussion with James Libson about the ethics of fictionalising the Holocaust. Tickets will be on sale from 9th January at www.kingsplace.co.uk.

Tuesday 11th February 2020 – The Forgotten Exiles – Jewish Refugee Domestics in Britain, 1938 – 1945

11/02/2020 Leave a Comment

Although over twice as many refugees from Nazism came to Britain on so-called Domestic Visas than via the Kindertransports, this subject has received far less attention from researchers and the media. Dr Jennifer Craig-Norton will give a fascinating talk about her research into this neglected subject. It will also be a chance for members of the First, Second and Third Generations to share their own experiences, positive and negative, of this scheme and those of their relatives. Free places will be bookable in due course via the Winer Holocaust Library website.

Tuesday 14th January 2020 – Holocaust Memorial Day theme: Stand Together

14/01/2020 Leave a Comment

This Second Generation Network discussion group meeting looks at the HMD theme for 2020. What is the meaning of the concept Stand Together in the context of HMD? What is the significance of the idea for those of us with a Holocaust heritage? There is no need to book, but it would be helpful to have an idea of numbers. If you would like to attend, please contact: ginaburgesswinning@secondgeneration.org.uk.

Tuesday 3rd December – Children under the Nazis

03/12/2019 Leave a Comment

A member of the Second Generation Professor Nicholas Stargardt, who gave such an interesting presentation at the 1938 Forum at the Jewish Museum, will explore his research into the impact of Nazism on children during the Holocaust. Using sources from the time, ranging from welfare and medical files, to diaries, letters and children’s drawings, he will shed light on their lives by focusing on their play and other activities. Nick is a professor of modern European history at Oxford University and will also talk about how his own background has affected his research. His publications include The German War: A Nation Under Arms 1939 – 1945, Witnesses of War: Children’s Lives Under the Nazisand The German Idea of Militarism: Radical and Socialist Critics, 1866-1914. Members of all generations are welcome to this free event organised by the Second Generation Network and the Wiener Holocaust Library.
