Wednesday 14th October 2020: Writing the Holocaust – Authors’ Perspectives

As part of our series of events on ‘Writing the Holocaust’, we will hear from: Second Generation Network Member Esther Saraga – Berlin to London: An Emotional History of Two Refugees, fellow member of the Second Generation, Debra Barnes – The Young Survivors, and journalist and author Jack Fairweather – The Volunteer. Esther and Debra will share their experiences of working with and shaping their family material and history into narrative form, and Jack will explain how he carried out historical research and reconstructed the story. Their presentations will be followed by a Q+A session, giving you the opportunity to share your own experiences of writing and researching your family’s Holocaust history.

Start time 6.15pm for 6.30pm to give people time to set up and check their Zoom connection. Details of the eventbrite link will be included in the events email sent to Members. Tuesday 8th September – Discussion Group on Commemoration: To lay Stolpersteine or not to lay Stolpersteine? That is the question…

These commemorative ‘stumbling’ stones are one way to honour the memory of relatives persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime but they can raise complex issues. What are your thoughts and experiences? Network committee member Gina Burgess Winning will provide a short introduction to the topic outlining her experience of arranging for the laying of 20 Stolpersteine in the past ten years. An informal discussion group that provides an opportunity for members of the Second and Third Generations to share their views. Start time 6.15pm for 6.30pm to give people time to set up and check their Zoom connection. Tuesday 11th August – Holocaust Education Presentation and Q&A

Long-standing Network Member Vera Bernstein, now also a member of Generation 2 Generation, will share her family’s Holocaust history. Her presentation was part of G2G’s Holocaust Education programme  (www.generation2generation.org.uk). Vera will answer questions on her own experience of providing Holocaust Education as a member of the Second Generation. Start time 6.30pm. Wednesday 15th July – Discussion Group – Internment

To mark 80 years since the Internment of German and Austrian Jewish refugees in the UK, including many of our relatives, Network Committee Member Lesley Urbach will provide an introduction to this Discussion Group topic, highlighting its relevance for members of the Second and Third Generations and echoes in today’s world. Wednesday 24th June – Nick Barlay – Writing the Holocaust, followed by Q&A

Following the unfortunate postponement of the very popular writing workshop, we are delighted that Second Generation author and novelist Nick Barlay has agreed to provide a presentation/masterclass on his own experience of writing about his Holocaust heritage in Scattered Ghosts, and share tips on how to shape our own material and family narratives. Tuesday 9th June – George Szirtes – The Dual Perspective of an Exile, followed by Q&A

The prize-winning poet and translator will talk about his experience as a member of the Second Generation, his parents’ background in the camps, coming to the UK as a refugee from Hungary in 1956 and the creative process. His talk will be illustrated by readings from his most recent publications Mapping the Delta (2016, PBS Choice for poetry) and The Photographer at Sixteen (2019, a prose memoir of his mother), winner of East Anglian Book award for Biography and Memoir, currently long-listed for the Wingate Prize and one of the TLS’s Books of the Year.
