We continue to be very conscious of how difficult and complex it is for Network Members to deal with what is happening in Israel, Gaza and in our own countries. We have arranged for Philippa Carr and Dr Stuart Linke of JAMI (Mental Health for our Community) to return and provide a further session for Network Members, following the meeting two weeks ago, and help us deal with these challenges.
This second Zoom session will be primarily about sharing feelings and making connections between experiences. The meeting will proceed as follows:
6:30: Introductions, then Philippa and Stuart will briefly recap and set the frame for the evening.
6:45: Break-out spaces
7:30: Round-up of themes, and close.
Places will be limited and will be reserved for Members of the Network. Members who did not attend the meeting on 21st November are very welcome to attend, but we would suggest that you first view the recording of the event two weeks ago which is available in the Members’ area of our website www.secondgeneration.org.uk

Tuesday 28th November: Hybrid Event: Matthias Weniger: The Restitution of Stolen Silver, 6:30-8:00pm GMT: A Joint Second Generation Network and Wiener Holocaust Library Event
Third Generation and Network Committee Member Tom Willett will introduce Dr Matthias Weniger, Head of Provenance Research at the Bavarian National Museum. Dr Weniger directs a project tracing the heirs of 111 silver objects confiscated by the German Reich and later bought by the museum. The objects had been seized and sold to the museum as part of the gigantic silver levy imposed on German Jews in 1939. Dr Weiniger will explain how he and his small team have been tracing the heirs and returning the items. After the talk there will be a chance to ask questions and share stories of family objects that have been returned or restituted. Tuesday 14th November – Discussion Group: Our Experiences with Refugees
Network Members Anita Grosz and Elaine Sinclair will introduce the discussion of this topic by sharing their own experiences of working with, supporting and hosting refugees. A chance for Members of the Second and Third Generations to contribute their own experiences of working with and helping refugees. The Discussion Group meetings are for Members of the Second and Third Generations. Numbers are limited and Network Members will be given priority.

Tuesday, 24th October – Responding to the Needs of Current Refugees
The Network is presenting a panel discussion with three activists about the impact coming from a refugee background has had on their work with refugees. Panellists will share their work experiences and how their background impacted their choices. The panellists are: Nina Kaye (Second Generation), co-founder of Refugees at Home and of Epsom Refugee Network, Jennifer Langer (Second Generation), founder of Exiled Writers Ink and Mia Hasenson-Gross (Third Generation), Executive-Director of René Cassin, the Jewish Voice for Human Rights organisation.
Following the panel discussion there will be an opportunity to ask questions and to share your own experiences of working with refugees.

Tuesday 10th October – Traces Of A Lost Past – Finding Family Files in the World Jewish Relief Archive and the LostLift Database
Dr Rachel Pistol, a digital historian at King’s College London who works on the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure, will describe the contents of the World Jewish Relief archive (which has now been digitised) and how to access documents and files relating to refugees who fled Nazi persecution and came to the UK 1933-1946. WJR have the names of over 275,000 people and records for 65,000 refugees they supported in the 1930s and 1940s. Our relatives may well be amongst those who were registered and/or assisted.
Dr Kathrin Kleibl. a provenance researcher at the German Maritime Museum and head of a project on the auctioning of Jewish removal goods in the late 1930s and early 1940s in Bremen and Hamburg, will speak about the LostLiftdatabase (https://lostlift.dsm.museum).The database records details of the items packed by families into Liftvans (portable storage containers) that were due to be sent abroad, as people fled, but were seized and ultimately auctioned off. The database also details the looting process and sometimes provides documents about the items in the Liftvans. Dr Kleibl will give examples and explain how the descendants of the original owners are being traced, including Janet Lew, a Member of the Network Committee and how the LostLift database can be accessed.
